The Vestrahorn massif at Stokksnes sits at the southeastern tip of Iceland, where a cluster of dark gabbro and granophyre peaks rise almost 454 metres directly from a wide arc of volcanic black sand beach. The surface of the beach is rippled by wind and tide, and pools of still water collect along the shoreline, reflecting the jagged peaks above. The weather here is notoriously unpredictable — Vestrahorn can disappear into cloud for hours at a time — but when the light breaks across the peaks and the black sand, the result is a composition of considerable power.
