Legendary Landscapes of Devon and Cornwall: A Journey Through Image and Myth
Sebastien Coell’s Legendary Landscapes of Devon and Cornwall is a breathtaking tribute to two of England’s most iconic and evocative regions. In this evocative new release, Sebastien captures the very heart of Devon and Cornwall through a powerful fusion of visual artistry and storytelling. For those enchanted by dramatic scenery and the timeless allure of folklore, this book promises a journey through landscapes that are as captivating as the legends they hold.
A Visual and Narrative Masterpiece
The Legendary Landscapes of Devon and Cornwall provides an immersive experience celebrating the magic of two unforgettable counties. Through Sebastien’s lens, the wild moors of Dartmoor, the enigmatic Devon seaside and the rugged Cornish coastline come alive, their haunting beauty paired with vibrant tales of myth and history. Each page is a tapestry where natural grandeur meets folklore, where landscapes that stretch far into the horizon are infused with stories whispered through generations.
Sebastien’s photography adds to the diverse beauty of these regions: their windswept tors, the granite outcrops, the hidden coves, and the cliffs battered by relentless waves.
From tales of phantom hounds prowling Dartmoors Wistmans Woods to legends of smugglers and mermaids along the Cornish coast, every story deepens the connection to the land, enhancing the sense of place for both the seasoned traveller and the first-time visitor.
The Photographer’s Eye: Capturing the Spirit of the Land
From a photographer’s perspective, Sebastien’s work tries to capture the emotion of the landscape through his imagery. The stark contrast of a lone granite tor silhouetted against a moody Dartmoor sky and the interplay of light on the crashing waves of the Cornish coast help his images convey the beauty of these landscapes and the essence of their character.
Each photograph in the book was captured from over six years of exploring Cornwall and Devon, helping to show each landscape uniquely. The Dartmoor National Park, for example, is known for its unpredictable weather. Mist can roll in within minutes, transforming the landscape into a dreamlike realm. Sebastien embraced these challenges, often waiting hours for the perfect moment when the light broke through the clouds or when the mist added an otherworldly texture to the scene. His dedication to capturing these fleeting moments speaks to his deep connection to the land.
The coastline offered its own set of photographic opportunities and challenges in Cornwall. The dramatic cliffs and hidden coves demanded careful exploration, sometimes requiring long hikes or precarious climbs to find the ideal vantage point. Sebastien’s images of these locations highlight his adventurous spirit and his commitment to showcasing the raw, untamed beauty of Cornwall.
Personal Experiences: A Journey Through Devon and Cornwall
Sebastien’s connection to these landscapes is deeply personal. Growing up near The Dartmoor National Park, he was surrounded by its wild beauty from an early age. Childhood days were spent wandering the moors, where the bogs and tors seemed endless, each wrapped in its legend. These formative experiences instilled in him a profound appreciation for the land and its stories, shaping his perspective as a photographer and a storyteller.
In his own words:
“For those who have spent time here, these places are etched into the soul, filled with memories and mysteries that linger long after you leave. And for those lucky enough to call this place home, like I did growing up around Dartmoor National Park, the landscape becomes a part of you.”
The Evocative Folklore of the Land
The folklore of Devon and Cornwall is as much a part of the landscape as the tors and cliffs themselves. These are lands where history and myth intertwine, where every granite outcrop and winding path carries a story. Sebastien’s book delves into these tales, bringing them to life alongside his stunning images.
On Dartmoor, the legends are as haunting as the landscape. The moors are said to be home to spectral soldiers, ghostly apparitions, and phantom hounds, creating many famous stories like the infamous “Hound of the Baskervilles.”
Cornwall’s folklore is equally vivid. From the tales of giants who shaped the land to the mermaids who lured sailors to their doom, the region’s myths are as dramatic as its cliffs. Smugglers’ stories add another layer of intrigue, with secret coves and hidden tunnels evoking images of clandestine activities under moonlit skies.
Landscapes That Leave Their Mark
The landscapes of Devon and Cornwall hold a magic that words alone can rarely capture. It’s the brooding skies over Dartmoor, where the moors roll endlessly toward the horizon, punctuated by granite tors that seem as ancient as time itself. It’s the rugged cliffs of Cornwall, standing defiantly against the pounding sea, hiding secrets in the caves and coves below. These places linger in the heart long after you’ve seen them—places that hold memories and mysteries, shaping those lucky to walk their paths.

Legendary Landscapes of Devon and Cornwall is a photographer’s journey through the landscapes of Devon and Cornwall, exploring not just the beauty of these places but also the vibrant stories and folklore of two counties that, despite their distinct character, are bound together by a deep, shared history and a love of storytelling.

Learn more about my work
Welcome to my website featuring all my photographic wall art. I'm a Devon based landscape photographer with a passion for travel and photographing the beautiful natural world from around the many parts of picturesque Europe.
Much of my photographic work centres around my local Counties of Devon and Cornwall, and living in the UK has afforded me many benefits, with it's vast array of landscapes to photograph from the Dramatic Mountains of Scotland and Snowdonia to the Enchanting Coast of Cornwall.
When traveling abroad for photography, I am lucky enough to have mainland Europe to our East with a Range of Cultures, Landscapes, and Climates as well as Scandinavia and its Dramatic Peaks and Arctic Wildness to the North.
This has allowed me to visit amazing Countries like Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Norway, Iceland, Scotland, Wales and England to create a diverse portfolio of photographic works which I'm glad to be able to share with you.
My Passion for Photography
Exploring Norway's Lofoten IslandsEver since my early teenage years, I have been fascinated by the natural world, and our place among it. Living in rural Devon and spending my early working life, working across all parts of the Dartmoor National Park, I came to love the natural world and how small it can make you feel. I love being apart of the landscape and experiencing all of its character traits.
Landscape Photography was a natural progression to this and it has allowed me to undertake a creative pastime, which goes hand in hand with my love of nature and my thirst to explore the great world we live in.
Photography to me is a creative extension upon exploring new locations. It gives me both the drive and reward that comes with traveling to new places as well as a creative pastime to undertake.
Exploring Iceland's Skogafoss Waterfall
The Photographer Joe Cornish summed it up well when he said "Landscape Photography is, in its practise, a form of physical exercise, meditation and intense observation. It requires a myriad of decisions to bring the image to fulfilment" Joe Cornish
My History Selling Photography
After years of being a hobbyist landscape photographer, I decided to start a photography YouTube channel at VudbPhotoLife which documented my journeys out with my camera and the photography road trips I undertook in our VW Campervan Sylvie.
I then began selling my artwork through sites such as Amazon, Etsy and Ebay, which helps to support my hobby and gives me the ability to visit new locations.
I'm now happy to run my own website at Sebastien Coell Photography which offers my full array of artwork for sale, as well as creating articles to help new photographers learn new tips and ticks
Creating my YouTube channel and this website has given me immense satisfaction from the engagement on the channel and the appreciation and warm reviews that I receive when your order comes through the door.

Why choose Landscape Photography for your Home?
The saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words, and I believe photographic artwork also gives you an emotional connection and link to the past.
That connection could be a place you holidayed in, a place you grew up, got engaged or married at, the scenarios are endless and I hope my photographic art brings those connections and memories to you.
I try and capture images during sunset, sunrise or dramatic weather, hunting for artistic compositions, aiming to capture the location during the best light, conditions and time of year.
