The road to Elgol is one of the great drives in Scotland — a single-track lane that winds south through the Strathaird peninsula on the Isle of Skye, past ancient black houses and open moorland, until it reaches the small coastal village perched above the shore of Loch Scavaig with one of the most extraordinary views in the British Isles spread out before it. But it is on the way there, along the shores of Loch Slapin, that this photography print was made. Loch Slapin is a sea loch that cuts deep into the southern part of Skye, its dark water flanked on either side by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on the island — the great ridgeline of Beinn na Cro rising to the east, and the pale quartzite summit of Glas Bheinn Mhòr catching the light to the west. On the day captured here, the conditions were exceptional: the wind had dropped completely, the surface of the loch had become a perfect mirror, and the mountains and the sky above them were reflected in the still water with a clarity and symmetry that made the scene feel almost unreal — as if the world had been folded in half along the waterline. The light was soft and even, the colours muted and cool, and the whole composition had a quality of absolute stillness and quiet grandeur that is the very essence of the Scottish Highlands.
