🐉 Chrome Hill & Park House Hill, Dove Valley, Peak District — The Sleeping Dragon
In the upper Dove Valley on the southern edge of the Peak District, where the limestone plateau of the White Peak gives way to a wilder, more dramatic landscape of narrow ridges and steep-sided valleys, two hills rise from the valley floor in a formation so distinctive that it has earned its own name. Chrome Hill and Park House Hill — photographed here from the neighbouring summit of Hitter Hill — are known locally as the Sleeping Dragon, and it is easy to see why. The two hills form a single, sinuous ridge that undulates along the valley in a series of curves and peaks that, from the right angle, really does suggest the outline of a great creature lying at rest: the spine of the dragon running along the ridgeline, the head and tail tapering away at either end, the whole form settled into the landscape with a permanence and a presence that feels almost mythological. The limestone reef knolls that form these hills are among the oldest geological features in the Peak District, and the view from Hitter Hill across to them — with the valley falling away below and the wide Derbyshire sky above — is one of the finest and most distinctive in the entire national park.
