Loch Linnhe is a sea loch on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands, running roughly south-west from Fort William towards the Firth of Lorn. It is one of the longest sea lochs in Scotland, bordered by steep Highland hillsides and dotted along its shores with the remnants of old jetties and piers that once served the fishing and ferry trade of the region. This photography print was made on a foggy, misty day when low cloud had settled across the loch and the surrounding hills, reducing visibility and making conventional landscape photography difficult. Rather than wait for the mist to clear, the camera was turned towards this old decayed jetty, its weathered timber posts standing in the still water with the Highland landscape just visible as a soft suggestion of form in the background. The black and white treatment suits the conditions well — the mist flattens the tonal range of the scene and gives the image a quiet, graphic quality that works well as wall art in a range of interior settings.
