The Atlantic puffin is one of the most recognisable seabirds in the northern hemisphere, and Iceland is home to the largest breeding colony in the world, with an estimated 60% of the global population nesting on the island during the summer months between May and August. Puffins arrive at their breeding sites in spring, returning to the same burrows year after year, and spend the rest of the year at sea, where they are highly adapted to diving and swimming underwater in pursuit of small fish such as sand eels and capelin. On land they are considerably less graceful, and their upright posture, brightly coloured bill and slightly mechanical quality of movement — the way they turn their heads in sharp, precise increments and stand very still before launching into flight — makes them unusually compelling subjects to photograph. The best locations for puffin photography in Iceland are the coastal clifftops and headlands where the birds nest in burrows in the turf, particularly around the Westfjords, the Westman Islands and the Reykjanes Peninsula. This photography print was made during a road trip around Iceland, at a coastal location where the birds were active and approachable enough to allow a close portrait without disturbing them. The image captures the bird’s characteristic posture and the detail of its bill and plumage, and works well as wall art across a range of sizes, from smaller prints to larger statement pieces where the texture of the feathers and the quality of the coastal light become fully apparent.
