Richmond Park sits in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, roughly ten miles south-west of the city centre, and covers around 2,500 acres of ancient parkland — making it the largest of the Royal Parks and one of the largest urban parks in Europe. The park has been a deer sanctuary since the seventeenth century and is home to around 630 red and fallow deer, which roam freely across the grassland, woodland and bracken throughout the year. This photography print was made during a visit at sunset, when the low light picks out the texture of the deer’s coat and antlers and the open landscape takes on a quality that is difficult to associate with a city of London’s scale. The image was made in black and white, a treatment that suits the subject well — stripping back the colour allows the form of the stag and the atmosphere of the park to carry the composition. As wall art, the print works across a wide range of sizes, from smaller prints to larger statement pieces where the detail of the animal and the surrounding landscape become fully apparent.
