Wistman’s Wood occupies a narrow, boulder-strewn valley on the high moor of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, following the course of the West Dart River at an elevation of around 380 metres. It is one of the oldest and most unusual oak woodlands in Britain — a remnant of the ancient upland forest that once covered much of the moor, now reduced to a dense, low-growing stand of pedunculate oaks whose forms have been shaped over centuries by the damp, exposed conditions of the high moorland. The trees grow between and over large granite boulders, their roots threading through the rock, and every surface is covered in a thick layer of mosses, liverworts, and lichens that give the wood its distinctive, otherworldly appearance. Wistmans wood is a very old woodland stretching back over a thousand years, the woodland lies near a river in a very damp part of the moor, it’s these damp conditions which have caused lichens to cover the tree sapping their energy and causing them to grow smaller in these twisted and unique shapes.
