🖼️ A Black and White print of London's Big Ben at Westminster
Elizabeth Tower — more commonly known as Big Ben, though that name strictly refers to the main bell housed within it — stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster on the north bank of the Thames, at the point where the river bends between Lambeth Bridge and Waterloo Bridge. The tower was completed in 1859 as part of Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin’s Gothic Revival design for the rebuilt Houses of Parliament, following the fire that destroyed the original medieval palace in 1834. It rises to a height of 96 metres and is one of the most widely recognised structures in the world, appearing on an enormous range of printed material, souvenirs and artwork. The challenge in photographing it is finding a composition that moves beyond the standard frontal record shot and gives the image a different quality. Westminster Bridge, which runs directly alongside the tower, offers a series of stone arches along its parapet that can be used as a framing device, placing the tower within a defined architectural context rather than simply against the sky. This photography print was made using that approach — the camera positioned to use one of the bridge arches as a frame within the frame, with the tower visible through the opening. The black and white treatment removes the colour information from the scene and focuses attention on the tonal contrast between the stone of the bridge, the detail of the tower’s Gothic stonework, and the sky behind it. As wall art, the image works across a wide range of sizes, from smaller prints to larger statement pieces where the architectural detail becomes fully apparent.
Westminster Bridge and the surrounding area of central London is one of the most photographed locations in the world, and producing an image of Big Ben that has a considered compositional approach rather than simply documenting the landmark requires patience and an understanding of the location at different times of day. Whether you’re looking for a striking piece of home decor with a London, British or architectural cityscape theme, a bold black and white artwork for a living room, hallway or study, or a thoughtful gift for someone with a love of London, British architecture or urban photography, this print offers a strong sense of place at any size.
