🐎 Icelandic Horse, Iceland | Soft Light Portrait Wildlife Photography Print
The Icelandic horse is one of the most distinctive breeds in the world, a compact and hardy animal that has been bred in isolation on the island for over a thousand years and developed characteristics found in no other breed — among them the tölt, a smooth four-beat gait that allows the horse to cover rough Icelandic terrain at speed without the jarring motion of a conventional trot. The breed is protected by Icelandic law from crossbreeding with imported horses, and any Icelandic horse that leaves the island is not permitted to return, a measure that has preserved the genetic integrity of the breed over centuries of selective breeding in one of Europe’s most isolated environments.
