The Atlantic puffin breeds in large numbers along Iceland’s coastal clifftops and headlands each summer, returning to the same burrow sites year after year between May and August before heading back out to sea for the rest of the year. Iceland holds the largest breeding population of Atlantic puffins in the world, with estimates suggesting that more than half of the global population nests on the island, concentrated particularly around the Westman Islands, the Westfjords and the Reykjanes Peninsula. On land, puffins are distinctive for their upright posture, the bold orange and yellow colouring of their bill during the breeding season, and the precise, almost mechanical quality of their movements — the way they hold their position on a clifftop, turn their head in sharp increments, and launch into flight with a rapid wingbeat that seems disproportionate to their compact body. They are highly social birds and will often tolerate a patient observer at close range, which makes them one of the more accessible subjects for wildlife photography in Iceland. This photography print was made during a road trip around the island, at a coastal location where the birds were active and settled enough to allow a close portrait study.
