Brentor Church stands on the summit of a volcanic plug on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, close to Tavistock in Devon. At around 330 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest-elevation churches in England, a small, ancient structure perched on a column of sub-sea lava that erupted from the seabed millions of years ago, now rising sharply from the surrounding moorland.
The cliff edge below the church creates a natural leading line that draws the eye upward through the composition, the dark rock and the pale sky framing the building against the open Dartmoor horizon.
