Black Diamond Beach lies on the south coast of Iceland, immediately east of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier meets the North Atlantic. The lagoon is fed by the Vatnajökull ice cap — the largest glacier in Europe — and as icebergs calve from the glacier face and drift through the lagoon, they eventually reach the narrow channel that connects the lagoon to the sea. Once they pass through, the ocean currents and wave action carry them onto the black volcanic sand beach, where they sit in various stages of melt, their surfaces polished smooth by the water and catching the light in different ways depending on the time of day and the quality of the sky. The beach takes its name from the contrast between the dark sand and the translucent blue-white ice, which can resemble scattered diamonds when the light is right. This photography print was made just after sundown, when the sky shifted into a range of pink and rose tones that reflected off the wet sand and the surfaces of the ice, producing a composition with strong colour contrast and a clear sense of the cold, exposed character of the location. As wall art, the image works across a wide range of sizes, from smaller prints to larger statement pieces where the detail of the ice and the quality of the light become fully apparent.
