🖼️ Iceland's Skógafoss Waterfall captured in this fine art print
Skógafoss sits on the Skógá river on Iceland's south coast, roughly 150 kilometres east of Reykjavík, where the river drops approximately 60 metres over the edge of the former sea cliffs that once marked Iceland's coastline before the land extended seaward over centuries. The waterfall is around 25 metres wide, and the volume of water passing over the lip is sufficient to generate a near-constant mist at the base, which in the right light conditions produces rainbows visible from the viewing platform at the foot of the falls. The cliff face behind the waterfall is composed of columnar basalt, the same volcanic rock formation found across much of Iceland's south coast, and the combination of the dark rock, the white water and the surrounding green hillsides gives the location a strong graphic quality that translates well into photography. A staircase of around 500 steps climbs the hillside to the right of the falls, giving access to the top of the cliff and views along the river valley inland. This photography print captures the full scale and pattern of the waterfall — the way the water breaks and fans as it falls, the texture of the mist, and the relationship between the falls and the landscape around it. As wall art, the image works across a wide range of sizes, from smaller prints to larger statement pieces where the detail of the water and the basalt cliff become fully apparent.
