The Icelandic horse is one of the oldest and purest horse breeds in the world, brought to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries and isolated on the island ever since. Icelandic law prohibits the import of horses to the island, and any horse that leaves Iceland is not permitted to return, which has kept the breed genetically distinct for over a thousand years. The horses are compact and sturdy, well adapted to the harsh Icelandic climate, with a thick double coat in winter and a characteristically full, often two-toned mane that gives them a distinctive appearance. They are known for their calm temperament and their unique five-gaited movement, which includes the tölt — a smooth, four-beat gait not found in most other breeds. This photography print was made during a period of soft, diffused light caused by a heavy overcast sky, which eliminated harsh shadows and produced an even, flattering illumination across the horse’s coat and mane.
