Sun Voyager, Reykjavik, Iceland — black and white long-exposure coastal photography
The Sun Voyager — Sólfar in Icelandic — stands on the seafront promenade of Reykjavik, facing out across Faxaflói Bay towards the Esja mountain range on the far shore. Designed by sculptor Jón Gunnar Árnason and unveiled in 1990, the steel sculpture takes the form of a Viking longship and has become one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Icelandic capital. This photography print was made using a long exposure, which has the effect of smoothing the movement of the clouds into sweeping streaks across the sky — giving the image a sense of motion and atmosphere that a standard exposure would not capture. Shot in black and white, the tonal contrast between the polished steel of the sculpture, the textured sky and the stillness of the bay creates a composition that works well as wall art across a wide range of sizes, from smaller prints to large statement pieces.
