Reine sits at the southern end of Moskenesøya, the westernmost of the main Lofoten Islands, its cluster of red and white rorbu huts arranged along the shoreline of the Reinefjord with the jagged peaks of the Lofoten mountains rising steeply on all sides. The village is one of the most photographed locations in Norway, the combination of the traditional fishing huts, the dark fjord water and the mountain backdrop creating a composition that has become closely associated with the Lofoten Islands as a whole. The rorbu huts that line the waterfront were originally built as seasonal accommodation for the fishermen who came to the Lofoten Islands each winter to fish for the vast stocks of Arctic cod that migrate through the area — the Lofoten cod fishery being one of the oldest and most productive in the world. Many of the huts have since been converted into holiday accommodation, allowing visitors to stay at the water’s edge with the mountains above and the fjord below.
