Towanroath engine house stands on the cliff edge at Wheal Coates, a former tin and copper mine on the St Agnes headland in north Cornwall, roughly midway between Newquay and St Ives. The mine was operational from the eighteenth century until the late nineteenth century, and the surviving engine house — now managed by the National Trust — is one of the most photographed industrial ruins on the Cornish coast. The location sits above a dramatic stretch of coastline where the land drops sharply to the sea, and the combination of the stone engine house, the open Atlantic horizon and the surrounding heathland gives the composition a strong sense of place and scale. This photography print was made during a summer visit when the heather was in full bloom, covering the clifftop in a dense sweep of purple that frames the mineshaft and the coastline beyond.
