Towanroath Mine Shaft at Wheal Coates occupies one of the most dramatic clifftop positions on the north Cornish coast, standing above the St Agnes Heritage Coast with the English Channel stretching out behind it and the heather-covered headland rolling toward the sea on either side. The engine house was built in the 1870s to pump water from the undersea workings of the Wheal Coates tin and copper mine, and its position at the very edge of the cliff gives it an extraordinary relationship with the surrounding coastal landscape. This black and white landscape photography print was captured at sunrise on an overcast morning, when the diffused early light settled evenly across the scene and removed the distraction of colour — leaving the form of the engine house, the texture of the headland and the tonal depth of the sky to carry the image.
