Seascape Photography of Cornwalls Towanroath mineshaft at Wheal Coates
Towanroath Mine Shaft is the most photographed engine house on the Cornish coast, standing on the clifftop at Wheal Coates above the St Agnes headland on the north Cornish coast. The mine was part of the St Agnes tin and copper mining district, and the engine house — built in the 1870s to pump water from the undersea workings below — sits at the edge of the cliff in a position that gives it an extraordinary relationship with the sea and the surrounding coastal landscape. The headland is covered in heather and coastal scrub, and in late summer the purple bloom of the heather adds a further layer of colour to an already striking composition. This landscape photography print was captured on an overcast morning at sunrise, the cloud cover catching and diffusing the light across the scene in a way that gives the image its moody, atmospheric quality — the kind of light that suits the industrial heritage of the location and the rugged character of the Cornish coastline, and which translates particularly well as wall art at larger sizes where the tonal depth of the scene can be fully appreciated.
Wheal Coates is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Towanroath engine house is one of its most recognisable structures. The combination of industrial heritage, dramatic clifftop position and the quality of the Cornish coastal light makes this one of the most compelling subjects on the south-west coast of England. Whether you’re looking for a considered piece of home decor for a Cornwall, Cornish mining or British coastal heritage-themed room, a striking artwork for a hallway or living space, or a thoughtful gift for someone with a love of Cornwall, the St Agnes coast or dramatic Cornish mining and seascape photography, this print offers a strong sense of place at any size.
