🖼️ Rome's Colosseum sits below a blue sky in this photographic print
The Colosseum stands at the eastern end of the Roman Forum in the centre of Rome, a short walk from the Palatine Hill and the Arch of Constantine. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian around 70 AD and was completed under his successor Titus in 80 AD, with further modifications made during the reign of Domitian. At its completion it was the largest amphitheatre in the Roman world, capable of holding between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, and it remained in active use for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and public spectacles for several centuries. The building is elliptical in plan, measuring 188 metres along its longest axis and rising to a height of around 48 metres at its outer wall, which is constructed from travertine limestone, tuff and brick-faced concrete. The exterior is articulated by four storeys of arched openings, each framed by engaged columns in the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders from bottom to top. This photography print was made during midday, when the light was strong and even across the facade, using a long exposure technique that blurs the movement of the crowd and the clouds in the sky above the building. The effect gives the scene a sense of continuous time passing — the ancient stone structure fixed and still while the world moves around it — which felt appropriate for a building of this age and scale. As wall art, the image works across a wide range of sizes, from smaller prints to larger statement pieces where the detail of the stonework and the quality of the light become fully apparent.
The Colosseum is one of the most recognisable structures in the world and one of the defining images of Rome and the Roman Empire, and photographing it in a way that goes beyond the standard tourist record shot requires patience and a considered approach to light and technique.
