Thurne Windpump stands on the bank of the River Thurne in the Norfolk Broads, a few miles north of Acle and close to the village of Thurne itself. The Broads are a network of rivers, lakes, and marshes in Norfolk and Suffolk, formed from medieval peat diggings that flooded over centuries and now protected as a National Park. The windpumps that dot the landscape here were built from the eighteenth century onwards to drain the low-lying marshland and control water levels across the grazing meadows — a practical piece of engineering that has become one of the defining visual features of the Norfolk landscape. Thurne Windpump is one of the better-preserved examples, its white-painted tower and cap visible from some distance across the flat, open terrain of the Broads.
