Wistman’s Wood sits in a sheltered valley on the high moor of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, at an elevation of around 380 metres above sea level, following the course of the West Dart River between Two Bridges and Princetown. It is one of the highest and most ancient oak woodlands in Britain, a remnant of the upland forest that once covered much of Dartmoor before the climate shifted and the peat began to form. The trees are predominantly pedunculate oaks, but centuries of exposure to the damp, windswept conditions of the high moor have stunted their growth and twisted their forms into shapes that bear little resemblance to lowland woodland oaks. Every surface — trunk, branch, and boulder — is covered in a dense layer of mosses, liverworts, and lichens, giving the wood a quality that is unlike almost anywhere else in England.
