The Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge on the western edge of Bristol, carrying the road between Clifton on the Somerset side and Leigh Woods in North Somerset at a height of 75 metres above the River Avon below. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1864, five years after his death, the bridge is one of the most recognisable pieces of Victorian engineering in Britain — its wrought iron chains, limestone towers and elegant proportions making it as much a work of architecture as of civil engineering.
