Holwell Lawn is a broad, open area of moorland on the eastern side of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, sitting between Haytor and Hound Tor at an elevation where the landscape is exposed to weather coming in from any direction. The hawthorn tree here is one of the more photographed trees on Dartmoor — its position close to the granite tor gives it an unusual appearance from certain angles, the trunk and branches growing in a way that makes it look as though it has emerged directly from the rock rather than the ground beside it. In normal conditions the tree is a striking subject against the open moorland sky, but in February 2018 the conditions were far from normal. The Beast from the East brought a sustained blast of cold air from Siberia across the UK, and when Storm Emma pushed moisture northward at the same time, the result was heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions across much of England — including Dartmoor, where the combination of altitude and exposure meant the effects were particularly pronounced. This photography print was taken during that event, with the hawthorn and tor under a covering of snow and the moorland around them reduced to a white, featureless plain, giving the image a quality that is quite different from the tree's usual appearance and making it a distinctive piece of Devon winter wall art or home decor.
The Beast from the East of 2018 was one of the most significant cold weather events in the UK in a generation, and its effects on Dartmoor — already one of the higher and more exposed landscapes in southern England — were striking. Snow on Dartmoor is not unusual in winter, but the depth and duration of the 2018 event, combined with the drifting caused by the strong easterly winds, produced conditions that brought the moor to a standstill for two days and created a landscape that looked genuinely arctic. The hawthorn at Holwell Lawn in these conditions — the tor behind it, the snow-covered grass, the flat grey sky — has a stark, graphic quality that works well as artwork in a range of interior settings.
