Brentor Church — formally St Michael de Rupe — stands at the summit of Brent Tor, a volcanic plug rising to around 330 metres on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, close to Tavistock in Devon. The tor is formed from a sub-sea lava eruption, and the church, which dates from the twelfth century, is one of the highest elevation parish churches in England. The composition here follows the natural leading lines of the cliff edge up to the church, a structure that gives the image a strong sense of direction and scale. This photography print was made in black and white, a treatment that suits the subject well — the tonal contrast between the dark volcanic rock, the church tower and the open sky gives the image a quality that colour would not achieve in the same way.
