✈️ Sólheimasandur Plane Crash, Iceland | US Navy DC-3 Black Sand Beach Photography Print
Sólheimasandur is a stretch of black volcanic sand beach on Iceland’s South Coast, lying between the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the sea, accessible by a long walk across the flat, featureless lava plain from the road. The beach is best known as the site of the wreck of a United States Navy Douglas DC-3 aircraft, which made an emergency landing here in November 1973 after the crew accidentally switched to an empty fuel tank, causing both engines to fail. The aircraft came down on the black sand without casualties, and the wreck has remained on the beach ever since, slowly weathering and rusting into the landscape over the decades.
