Iceland's Sólheimasandur plane crash sits under a moody sky in this photographic print
Sólheimasandur is a stretch of black volcanic sand beach on Iceland's south coast, accessible via a long walk across flat, featureless lava plain from the Ring Road. The landscape here is stark and largely empty — the black sand extends in every direction, the sky sits low and heavy, and the absence of vegetation or landmarks gives the location an otherworldly quality that makes it unlike almost anywhere else in Iceland. At the centre of this landscape sits the wreck of a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3, which crash-landed here in November 1973 after the crew selected the wrong fuel tank, causing the engines to fail. Everyone on board survived. The aircraft has remained on the beach ever since, slowly weathering into the black sand, and has become one of Iceland's most visited and photographed locations — a piece of aviation history that has taken on a second life as a landmark and, increasingly, as a subject for wall art and home decor.
The walk out to the wreck — around four kilometres each way across the flat black plain — means that arriving at the aircraft feels earned, and the scale of it against the open sky and sand is more striking in person than photographs often suggest.
