Ponte dei Salti — the Bridge of Jumps — is a double-arched Roman bridge that spans the Verzasca River in the Verzasca Valley of the Swiss canton of Ticino, close to the Italian border. The bridge is one of the most photographed structures in Switzerland, and the reason is immediately clear: the water of the Verzasca runs an extraordinary teal blue-green, coloured by the glacial minerals carried down from the surrounding Alps, and the Roman stonework of the arches frames the river in a way that has changed little in centuries. This landscape photography print was captured using a 16-minute long exposure, a technique that smooths the water to a silky, almost glass-like surface and, crucially, removes the tourists who gather on the bridge throughout the day — leaving the scene as it would have appeared long before it became a destination. The result works well as wall art in both contemporary and more traditional interior settings, particularly where a sense of place and technical craft in the photography is valued.
