Raasay Sound is the stretch of sheltered water that runs between the eastern shore of the Isle of Skye and the island of Raasay, with the mountains of the Scottish mainland visible across the water to the east. The sound is bounded on both sides by high ground — the Trotternish and Red Cuillin ridges of Skye to the west, and the long spine of Raasay rising to the east — giving the water a contained, quiet character that contrasts with the exposed Atlantic coastline on the other side of the island. This photography print was made from the Skye shore during a snowy early morning sunrise, the light arriving low and cold across the sound, the mountains of mainland Scotland catching the first colour of the day above the far shore.
