Towanroath engine house stands on the cliff edge at Wheal Coates, a former tin and copper mine on the St Agnes headland in north Cornwall. The mine worked the seams beneath the cliff from the eighteenth century until the late nineteenth century, and the surviving engine house — now in the care of the National Trust — is one of the most recognisable industrial ruins on the Cornish coast. This photography print was made at sunrise, when an overcast sky diffused the early light across the headland and the sea, creating the kind of flat, even illumination that brings out the texture of the stonework and the detail of the coastline without the hard shadows of direct sun.
