Hamnøy is a small fishing village on the island of Moskenesøya in the Lofoten archipelago of northern Norway, situated where the Hamnøyfjorden meets the open Norwegian Sea. The village is best known for its cluster of traditional red rorbuer — the distinctive wooden fishing huts built on stilts over the water — which sit directly beneath a dramatic wall of jagged mountain peaks that rise steeply from the shoreline. The rorbuer were originally built to house seasonal fishermen who came to the Lofoten Islands to take part in the annual cod fishery, one of the largest in the world, and many have since been converted into holiday accommodation.
