Stover Country Park sits on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, a few miles north of Newton Abbot, and centres on a lake formed in the eighteenth century as part of the landscaped grounds of Stover House. The park is a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, known particularly for its wetland habitats and the variety of birdlife that uses the lake and surrounding woodland through the year. In normal conditions the lake reflects the surrounding trees and sky in a way that makes it a popular subject for photography, but in February 2018 the conditions were anything but normal — the Beast from the East brought a sustained period of exceptionally cold easterly winds from Siberia, followed by Storm Emma pushing moisture northward, and the combination produced snowfall and hard frosts across much of the UK that were unusual in both their severity and duration. This photography print was taken during that freeze, when the lake at Stover had iced over and the surrounding landscape was covered in snow — a scene that is rare in Devon and gives the image a quality quite different from the park's usual appearance, making it a distinctive piece of Devon winter wall art or home decor.
The Beast from the East event of 2018 was one of the most significant cold weather episodes in the UK in several decades, and its effects were particularly striking in the South West, where hard frosts and frozen lakes are uncommon enough to feel genuinely unusual.
