✨ Kingswear Daymark, South Devon | Milky Way Astrophotography Print
The Daymark at Kingswear stands on the headland above the entrance to the Dart estuary on the South Devon coast, a distinctive octagonal tower built in 1864 as a navigational aid for vessels approaching Dartmouth from the sea. The structure is unmanned and unlit, its purpose purely visual — a fixed daymark that mariners can use to identify the estuary entrance from offshore. At night, with no artificial lighting on the headland and the South Devon coast relatively free from light pollution, the site offers a clear view of the night sky that is rarely available closer to the towns of Dartmouth and Kingswear. This photograph was taken at 2am, the Milky Way arching across the sky above the Daymark in a long exposure that captures the density of stars visible from this part of the South Devon coast.
