Búðakirkja, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland — the black church in the Icelandic landscape
Búðakirkja — the black church of Búðir — stands alone on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland, at the edge of a lava field that runs down to the shore of Breiðarförður Bay. The church was originally built in the early nineteenth century and demolished, then rebuilt in 1987 at the request of local families who wished to preserve it. Its black-painted timber exterior makes it one of the most visually distinctive buildings in Iceland — a small, simple structure set against a landscape of extraordinary scale, with the Snæfellsjökull glacier visible on clear days to the north-west. This photography print was made in black and white, a treatment that suits the subject well — the contrast between the dark church, the snow-edged mountains and the open sky gives the composition a tonal quality that a colour image would not achieve in the same way.
