🚨 Portland Bill Lighthouse, Dorset — Sea Thrift, Stone and Sky
Portland Bill sits at the very tip of the Isle of Portland — a narrow, wind-scoured peninsula of pale limestone that juts out into the English Channel from the Dorset coast like a pointing finger, the red-and-white striped lighthouse at its southernmost point standing watch over some of the most treacherous tidal races in British waters. It is a place of extraordinary, elemental beauty: the limestone plateau dropping away to the sea on three sides, the wind almost always present, the light constantly changing as the weather moves in off the Channel, and in late spring and early summer, the clifftops and the rocky margins of the peninsula carpeted in the vivid pink of wild sea thrift — one of the most beautiful and most characteristic of all British coastal wildflowers. This photography print was made during a day spent exploring Portland Bill in mid-2019, the sea thrift in full bloom around the base of the lighthouse, the flowers providing a vivid, living foreground to the great white tower rising behind them — a piece of wall art or home decor that captures the full, extraordinary beauty of one of Dorset’s most iconic and most atmospheric coastal landmarks.
The decision to render this image as a long-exposure black and white photograph was driven by the desire to capture the full drama of the Portland Bill landscape — the extraordinary contrast between the pale limestone, the dark sea, and the turbulent sky that is the defining visual quality of this location. The long exposure smooths the water and the clouds into silky, flowing forms, while the conversion to black and white strips away the colour and reveals the underlying geometry and tonal drama of the scene: the bold vertical of the lighthouse against the sweeping horizontal of the sky, the delicate tracery of the sea thrift flowers against the solid mass of the stone, the whole composition balanced between stillness and movement, between the permanent and the fleeting. It is a technique that suits Portland Bill perfectly — a place where the drama is always in the light and the weather and the relationship between the human-made and the natural — and the result is a striking and deeply atmospheric piece of artwork or gift that will bring the spirit of the Jurassic Coast into any home.
